Black Beech House

Haumoana, 4180

Residential

Bonnifait + Associates

The Black Beech House is nestled within a picturesque vineyard in Haumoana, Hawkes Bay, offering stunning sea views in the distance. The design brief called for a two-bedroom house with expansive living areas, an independent guest studio, and dedicated spaces for working on garments, artistry, and music. Additionally, the house features a large garage with a workshop for storing and repairing bicycles.

Designed with a large and gently folded roof over a single-storey ground plan, the Black Beech House creates a dialogue between intimate and open spaces within a courtyard typology. The house's unique design includes an oculus that interacts with the sun's movement, creating dynamic shadows within the core of the space. The covered deck provides a sheltered space from sea breezes while maintaining a connection to the surrounding vineyard and sea views, blending seamlessly with the natural landscape through gentle contours and Gabion basket retaining walls.
