Miramar North School
Classroom Expansion and School Infrastructure Upgrades
Essen Engineering provided structural engineering services for the development of additional teaching facilities and supporting school infrastructure at Miramar North School. The project involved delivering practical structural solutions within an operational school environment, requiring careful consideration of site constraints, construction staging and minimising disruption to day-to-day school activities.
Working within existing educational facilities often presents unique challenges, including integration with existing structures, maintaining access and ensuring construction works can be completed safely around staff and students. Essen Engineering collaborated with the wider project team to develop practical and buildable solutions to support the successful delivery of the project. Project Highlights
Structural engineering support for classroom expansion works.
Integration of new works within an operating school environment.
Coordination with project stakeholders and consultants.
Practical solutions focused on constructability and long-term performance.
Delivery of education infrastructure supporting future school growth.

Sacred Heart College Library & Art Rooms
Seismic Assessment and Strengthening
Essen Engineering provided the detailed seismic assessment, strengthening design and construction support for the Sacred Heart College Library and Art Rooms building in Lower Hutt.
The project involved the assessment and seismic retrofit of an existing two-storey education facility comprising reinforced concrete framing, structural steel portal frames, lightweight timber-framed walls and precast concrete flooring. The building was identified as having significant seismic deficiencies requiring a comprehensive strengthening strategy to improve resilience and support the continued use of the facility as a valuable learning environment.
Working within an operational school environment, the project required careful integration of strengthening measures with proposed architectural upgrades and future educational use. The strengthening works were designed to improve the seismic performance of the building while minimising disruption to the functionality and character of the existing facility.
The Challenge
A Detailed Seismic Assessment identified several critical structural weaknesses within the existing building. The assessment concluded that the building achieved approximately 15% New Building Standard (NBS), primarily due to deficiencies in the floor diaphragm, lightweight timber-framed bracing walls, roof bracing systems and portions of the steel portal frame structure. This classified the building as an earthquake-prone structure requiring significant intervention.
The challenge was to develop a practical strengthening solution that would:
-
Improve seismic resilience.
-
Support long-term use of the facility.
-
Integrate with planned refurbishment works.
-
Be constructable within an existing educational environment.
-
Deliver a cost-effective upgrade to the school's asset.
The Engineering Solution
Essen Engineering developed a comprehensive strengthening package addressing the key structural deficiencies identified during the assessment.
Strengthening measures included:
Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strengthening of the concrete floor diaphragm.
Upgrades to existing roof bracing systems.
Installation of new steel fly-bracing to structural portal frames.
Introduction of steel Reid-brace cross-bracing systems.
Strengthening of lightweight timber-framed bracing walls.
New collector beam systems to improve load transfer through the structure.
Connection strengthening and structural detailing upgrades.
The project combined modern retrofit techniques with traditional steel and timber strengthening methodologies to improve load paths throughout the building and enhance overall seismic performance.
